To build awareness of the unique challenges involved in developing sustainable and effective dual leadership structures, TCG, Dance/USA, the national service organization for dance, and the Institute for Cultural Policy and Practice at Virginia Tech developed a program for artistic and managing theatre and dance leaders. The seminars focused on the practices required to build strong team-based leadership models that advance artistic vision and that build a resilient, healthy organizational culture.
The training placed a strong emphasis on peer-to-peer learning and emphasized the unique dual leadership realities faced by artistic and managing leaders of not-for-profit professional theatre and dance. Topics addressed included: building leadership as an institutional capacity, increasing organizational cohesion and adaptability, establishing and maintaining a culture of trust and managing the tension between artistic vitality and organizational sustainability. The goal of the program was to make leaders more effective in working with each other, their staff, artists and boards. Attendees included artistic and executive/management leader teams.
